International Womens Day Dinner
On Thursday 24th March, staff and Committee members from Volunteers of Banyule attended a dinner to celebrate International Women’s Day and the role of women in Nillumbik.
It was an exciting evening with more than 200 women attending and enjoyed the dinner prepared by the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre. Entertainment was provided by local Nillumbik artists and included a stirring rendition of ‘I am Women’ led by Leslie Avril.
Volunteers of Banyule were delighted to have an Information Stall at this event and the chance to advertise our Nillumbik Volunteer Expo planned for May 2011. We were doubly excited to celebrate this event with the Mayor of Nillumbik, Cr Helen Coleman who is currently on leave from her position as Volunteer Resource Officer at Volunteers of Banyule.
Banyule Volunteer Awards 2011
Marking the International Year of the Volunteer + 10
2011 is a special year for volunteerism- it is IYV+10 - with the special intent of promoting greater global recognition of the contribution of volunteerism to society and to achieving peace and developement.
This goal is well recognised by Banyule City Council with its Community Volunteer Awards Evening held annually in The Great Hall. Volunteers of Banyule is proud to be part of this wonderful event. We congratulate all those nominated for an award and all Banyule volunteers whose efforts, skills and contribution help to build the Banyule community.
At Volunteers of Banyule, we continue to support and promote volunteering in the Banyule community so that we can achieve our vision that volunteer services will provide a more engaged and socially connected community.

Nillumbik Volunteer Expo 2011
The Nillumbik Volunteer Expo was the first time this event has been organized. The aim of the event was for the members of the community to learn more about volunteer opportunities offered by local Nillumbik organizations. It also provided an opportunity for community organizations to showcase their work and recruit volunteers.
The Victorian Volunteer Portal was a major focus at the expo where community organizations and members of the community were able to view this information resource as well as talk to members of the Department of Planning and Community Development.
There were 36 organisations that registered to be a part of this event. There were 2 more organizations that had heard about the event at the last minute and they also joined on the day. Approximately 100 people from these organizations participated at their stalls.
Approximately 250 members of the community attended this event. Students from Eltham High School, Diamond Valley Secondary College, Montmorency Secondary College and Bundoora Secondary College were amongst these people and attended the expo as part of an excursion, as well as two disability groups, Araluen and Neami.
Entertainment included a roving clown who mingled with all community members and was a great hit with all the school students. The Ramblers, a swing band filled the room with beautiful music and a wonderful atmosphere.
Feedback
Verbal and written feedback were sourced from all stall holders and a selection of the members of the community. Everyone told us that they loved the event and the opportunity to resource community organizations, some that people didn’t even know existed. It was a great network experience for so many people. The atmosphere amongst all stall holders was extremely friendly and happy. Members of the community really enjoyed the day with many securing volunteering opportunities.
